How many times can you say that staying up most of the night so as not to miss your train is worth it? In this instance I definitely can.

Being new to the Betting and Gambling industries I jumped at the chance to attend this year’s Betting on Football conference organised by SBC News and hosted at the Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.  It seemed like the perfect opportunity to get a better understanding of how these industries work together, what expectations they have of each other and to meet the people at the forefront of this.

I wasn’t disappointed!  As soon as I arrived, I made a beeline for the coffee and muffins and, was kindly introduced to several people also at the event. The Speakers were excellent, each sharing their insight into the opportunities open for betting in football, realistic guidance on how to work effectively with these industries and the potential innovations that could really have an impact on the teams, the fans and the companies who support them.

Betting on Football Conference 2015

From George Harborne at West Bromwich Albion and Paul Reeves at Sheffield United sharing their thoughts on what makes a good relationship with a sponsor to an interesting talk from panelists Joe Tacopina, Gianluca Cambareri, Fabio Schiavolin and Quirino Mancini discussing with great optimism the challenges currently faced by Italian clubs, the planned and rejuvenation projects and what a huge part technology can play in engaging fans and getting more people through the turnstiles.

It really was a fantastic and entertaining learning experience, I walked away from the conference with a better understand of how gambling and football work together worldwide and how each country’s rules differ from the last, some heavily regulated with clearly defined routes to market, while others follow a stringent (not necessarily documented) code of conduct not be broken under any circumstances.

As well as the talk the food, beverages and conversation were continually flowing.  I am very much looking forward to the next conference and am excited to see how technology, development and design can impact the way the two industries work together.
