On International Women's Day, we'd like to celebrate the amazing women working at Degree 53. We've asked them a few questions to learn more about them.

Why did you get into technology?

I first became interested in working with technology whilst being part of a focus group to improve a call centre banking system I was using in my then role as a call centre operative. I really loved the idea that you didn’t just have to put up with problematic systems and rubbish processes… you could fix them and improve things for everyone!

Who inspires you?

I probably take most inspiration from my sister – she has a young family which is demanding in itself but alongside that works with older people with mental health problems, every day trying to bring them out of themselves and keep them happy and healthy. Despite her own health problems, she remains positive, strong and powerful, even when she might not feel it outwardly – she is a constant inspiration to me.

How do you find working at Degree 53?

Degree 53 is the first place I’ve worked where I don’t feel like people feel I know less or I’m not as good at my job or my opinion isn’t relevant because I’m female. It’s a good place to be!

Why did you get into technology?

I’ve always been a bit of a tech nerd, even at a young age. I would always be on a computer of some sort, whether it was a Gameboy, Sega, Playstation, PC, mobile phone, MacBook, iPod, iPad, iPhone… You name it! I’ve had it all. It was only fitting that I would be doing something in the digital space, it just happened to end up being Design. There’s so much growth and opportunity, so it would have been silly not to get into the tech industry.

Who inspires you?

I tend not to name drop so I’d say close friends, family and colleagues around me. When it comes to design, I’m inspired a lot by music and film. When I was younger, I wanted to work at Pixar as an animator. Pixar’s style is very distinct and that’s really what I look for to be inspired. Something that everyone else does but it has that special thing you can’t quite explai,n but you know it’s them. I hope I can create something like that one day!

How do you find working at Degree 53?

Degree 53 is a massive part of my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s allowed me to grow as a professional and as a person, and I have been faced with so many challenges and opportunities over the years. On reflection (which I don’t really do a lot of), it’s been a fantastic journey… and it’s only the beginning. There’s never a boring day at Degree 53 for me and what’s weird is… I see the number 53 everywhere I go… which must be a good sign!

Why did you get into technology?

My role isn’t specific to technology per se, however, I’ve always leaned towards HR in a digital environment. I find that the pace and the atmosphere is the most exciting, I love hearing about new products and working closely with technology teams. I taught myself HTML when I was at school (good old myspace days!) so I’ve always had an interest in technology and web development.

Who inspires you?

I wouldn’t say she “inspires” me as such, but I find Sheryl Sandberg (COO of Facebook) really interested me as I was starting my career. Her book, Lean In, is definitely worth a read.

How do you find working at Degree 53?

I love Degree 53! It’s extremely busy and fast paced, which I enjoy as I feel like I thrive in this kind of environment. I’ve given a great deal of autonomy and responsibility, which is allowing me to continually develop and enhance my skills. My role is incredibly varied – I may be recruiting new talent, organising an exciting company event or working on an HR piece – I touch all areas of the business and of course the people are great.

Why did you get into technology?

I worked within an IT/Software environment before working at Degree 53 and realised I wanted to continue in the industry in the right role for me (project management).

Why did you get into technology?

I've always been interested in digital stuff, as I used to spend a lot of time online when I was at school (also learning HTML for MySpace!). I first got involved in tech when I was working for a banking software company where I had to learn a lot about software development, mobile apps and UX/UI design for my role. I really enjoyed it and wanted to continue my career in this field. It's such a fast changing area and I'm always interested in finding out what new technologies are brought out.

Who inspires you?

I find inspiration in different areas, such as films, music, art, travel - anything I can apply to my work and life in general. Of course, my friends and family are a huge inspiration for me, and seeing their own progression and drive to succeed is very inspiring.

How do you find working at Degree 53?

I absolutely love working at Degree 53, it's such a dynamic and fun company! Everyone is very supportive and happy to share their knowledge. I handle all the marketing activities for the agency and work with different departments, so it makes my job really interesting, as I get to learn different areas of the business. It's also great to see how my work can make an impact on the company and I feel very valued here.

Why did you get into technology?

In the year 1993, I was sitting in the cinema at the age of 5, watching a film called Jurassic Park. I was absolutely blown away and captivated by this amazing world I was watching on screen and I turned to my dad and said: ‘Are those Dinosaurs real?’…he replied with: ‘No, they are built on the computer.’ I was amazed that people had been able to build something so incredible from tech and I’ve pursued a career in computer technology ever since that day.

Who inspires you?

My colleagues. Working in technology for the last 10 years, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some of the most incredible minds. I’ve watched them create worlds like Avatar and Harry Potter, and to be part of a team on projects like that, you can’t help not to be inspired. I’ve always been of the thinking to remain as open minded as you can to new information and try to soak everything up like a sponge. There is a wealth of knowledge in your peers, use them for this.

How do you find working at Degree 53?

I really enjoy it. They are a very welcoming company where you are definitely made to feel like you are one of the family. There is a big support for helping each other if you are ever stuck on a technical problem, especially amongst the developers. This type of collaborative environment makes it a really friendly place to work, and technology wise really helps push for good coding standards and helps everyone improve their skills. The office banter isn’t bad either.

Why did you get into technology?

I used to work in the super yacht industry and I grew tired of the lack of progression and change. Those super rich folk were so stuck in their ways and it frustrated me! I wanted to get myself into an industry that is constantly evolving, and technology seemed like the most obvious choice for me. Since I first dipped my toe into tech, I’ve never looked back. I’ve worked with some incredibly clever, funny and interesting people and I’ve gained so much knowledge into our ever changing world of technology.

Who inspires you?

It’s hard to pick just one inspiration, but Frida Kahlo sticks out as someone who I’ve always admired. She is my Latin American heroine! She had such a difficult and challenging upbringing, but it never held her back from realising her dreams. Her artwork is beautiful too and really celebrates Mexican folk culture (one of my all-time favourite things!).

How do you find working at Degree 53?

This sounds so cliché… but Degree 53 really is like a little family and it’s somewhere I genuinely enjoy coming to every day. We all have a lot of respect for each other and I laugh at least five times a day. This is very important – laughing is essential. It’s also somewhere I’ve really grown as a project manager, and where I’ve had a lot of opportunities and responsibilities given to me and I can’t thank them enough for that.
