Degree 53 are an award-winning design and software development agency based in Manchester that specialises in the gambling sector.
Our mission is to "Improve the digital experience for all" and we are looking for a Head of Development to join the team to help us achieve that goal. The Head of Development will oversee the development team, ensuring they deliver on time and on budget, to the high quality we strive for.
We have three distinct business units: the agency, client retained teams and a new team building our own products. You will be responsible for managing teams across all three of these areas. There is currently approximately 30 permanent developers plus contractors split across 5 teams: frontend, web, middleware, backend and native apps.

What we expect
You will be the line manager to a team of developers and will be responsible for technical recruitment, 1-2-1s, as well as identifying training needs or skills gaps within the teams.
You will work with the operations team to ensure that the right people work on the right projects and help them solve any resourcing issues.
We are looking for someone who can take projects from inception, right the way through the project, closely overseeing it technically to ensure we deliver the right solution to the best quality, providing value for our clients and internal stakeholders.
You will be involved in the full project lifecycle from estimating the work, creation and reviewing of technical specifications. You will ensure that the team leads and Senior Developers and their teams deliver projects in line with the industry and Degree 53 best practices.
You should have an excellent, broad knowledge of all things web and CMS. As you'll also be working with a native app team, any experience with this is beneficial.
You must be keen on keeping up-to-date with new technologies, techniques and processes, and identify where these could lead to improvements for the technical team or wider business.
You will take full responsibility for the quality of the solutions developed for our clients.
You will advocate and drive best practices and technical improvements in the team.
You will champion, maintain and uphold the SDLC, driving improvements to working practices.
You will provide leadership to the team, mentoring the developers, giving them technical guidance and identifying any areas for individual and professional growth.
